Resolutions! Click for YouTube Video

Happy New Year! Did you ever wonder where the “New Year” really started?  In my interest to find this out, a quick internet search let me know that the Babylonians and Chinese had celebrated the New Year 4,000 years ago. There are probably many new year dates set similarly.  However, some new years were not celebrated in January. For the most part I have been reading that it was celebrated in late March with the arrival of Spring.  Interestingly, Romans Emperor Julius Caesar one year let it go on for 445 days to make the new year start on January 1. I feel like we just did that again in 2020, hmm, anyway.
This had me thinking about how resolutions started? Where are they from? Again, Romans and also the Chinese have a history as to resolutions. I am sure that there are many stories again where resolutions were a part of their history. During Caesar’s reign. They were based on a moral nature. Being good and kind to fellow man. All that stuff. I am joking. I do have to say, I do not think high moral nature should be a New Year’s Resolution it should be a way of life.
In recent history, which is to say, how long I can remember, New Year Resolutions have been more about setting goals in personal fitness, finances, or professional aspirations. While January 1 is ancient history now, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on those resolutions that were set in January to see where you are with them? Have you accomplished what you set out so far in the last month and a half or so? Have you modified your resolution, even if just a bit? Flexibility, keeping fluid with life is a resolution for me this year. This is a big one for me so wish me luck and let us not follow up on my progress. LOL!  Now, we have the Chinese New Year in a few days, it made me wonder how many of us will be using that as a “reset day” for our resolutions. I once worked with someone and we would have a weekly check in. To see what I was doing businesswise. I would reflect on my goals vs. what I did that week before, and sometimes, she would remind me how Jan.1 can be any day of the week, month, or year. I took comfort in that and still do! I do not get discouraged at what I had not achieved, instead, I find hope in tomorrow, a new day or Jan. 1 and go at it again.  I hope you have great success in achieving your resolutions this year and every year.
Now, if you want to do something for your home that gives it a fresh start, here are a few things I suggest.

  1. Move the furniture or buy furniture.
  2. Check your smoke alarms.
  3. Plan a deferred maintenance calendar. Take on one project a month.
  4. Do a pre-Spring cleaning. Maybe declutter a closet, room, or the garage.
That should be enough to get you started and your home will thank you.
